MADALLA, Nigeria (AP) — Women returned to clean the blood from St. Theresa Catholic Church on Monday and one man wept uncontrollably amid its debris as a Nigerian Christian association demanded protection for its churches.

At least 35 people died at St. Theresa and dozens more were wounded as radical Muslim militants launched coordinated attacks across Africa’s most populous nation within hours of one another. Four more people were killed in other violence blamed on the group known as Boko Haram.

Crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the church’s dirt parking lot Monday, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more of their places of worship.

It was the second year in a row that the extremists seeking to install Islamic Shariah law across the country of 160 million staged such attacks. Last year, a series of bombings on Christmas Eve killed 32 people in Nigeria.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday’s blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ. Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties.

In the ensuing chaos, a mortally wounded man had cradled his wounded stomach and begged a priest for religious atonement. “Father, pray for me. I will not survive,” he said.

At least 52 people were wounded in the blast, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the bombing at his post-Christmas blessing Monday, urging people to pray for the victims and Nigeria’s Christian community.

“In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: Violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace,” he said.

The U.N. Security Council condemned the attacks “in the strongest terms” and called for the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors “of these reprehensible acts” to be brought to justice.

The African Union also condemned the attacks and pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

“Boko Haram’s continued acts of terror and cruelty and absolute disregard for human life cannot be justified by any religion or faith,” said a statement attributed to AU commission chairman Jean Ping.

On Sunday, a bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation’s northeast. Three people died in those assaults.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria’s Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with the public.

“There will never be peace until our demands are met,” the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. “We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended.”

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria. The group, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege” in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria’s capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

That has fueled speculation about the group’s ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Analysts say political considerations also likely have played a part in the country’s thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation’s predominantly Muslim north.

Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an “ugly incident.”

“There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts,” the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. “It’s one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever.”

However, others don’t remain as sure as the president. The northern state section of the powerful Christian Association of Nigeria issued a statement late Monday night demanding government protection for its churches, warning that “the situation may degenerate to a religious war.”

“We shall henceforth in the midst of these provocations and wanton destruction of innocent lives and property be compelled to make our own efforts and arrangements to protect the lives of innocent Christians and peace loving citizens of this country,” the statement read.

“We are therefore calling on all Christians to be law abiding but defend themselves whenever the need arises.”

Speaking about his pain management he said:

“As long as I can deal with pain, I’ll be out there,” while adding, “I don’t want to let the guys down, so I’ll do what I can to be out there.”

While Roethlisberger sat out during his teams Sunday victory over the St. Louis Rams he did fully participate in team practice on Thursday.

Ben Roethlisberger sprained his ankle during Pittsburgh’s Dec. 8 meeting against the Cleveland Browns, a diagnosis that was confirmed with the help of an MRI.

At this time the QB is calling his ankle “a little sore.”

Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians acknowledged that the ankle was doing better and noted:

“I want him out there but not at the risk of injuring himself,” Arians said. “If he can’t move around and get out of the way, there’s no sense in getting him out there.”

If Roethlisberger still can’t play Charlie Batch will once again take the QB1 position where he threw for 208 yards to help defeat the St. Louis Rams.

In the meantime the Steelers are still hoping to capture a win. If Pittsburgh wins and the Baltimore Ravens lose to the Cincinnati Bengals they will capture the AFC North championship title.

Given his history of playing with broken and injured body parts I highly suspect he’ll play on Sunday if he’s feeling even moderately better.

Do you think Pittsburgh can win their game on Sunday if Ben Roethlisberger is forced to sit out?

Becoming a Charity Fundraiser – The following article outlines the job duties, training involved, salary expectations and future prospects of taking on a career as a Charity Fundraiser.

Preview:

Charity fundraisers are professionals employed by specific charities to raise money. Their task is to mount campaigns designed to encourage donations from a variety of sources, such as industry and corporate donors, charitable trusts, central and local government, wealthy individuals, and the general public.

The Job:

The fundraiser’s job is to provide a program of activities so that the charity is not dependent on a single source of finance. The work can be varied and there is scope for individual initiative. Apart from corporate fundraising, which involves getting donations from companies and sponsorship, community fundraising is another element of the job. This involves such activities as setting up flag days, house-to-house collections, or local events.

Many charities market trade goods, such as gifts carrying the charity’s logo. Fundraisers would have to market these items, putting together a Christmas mail-order catalog, for example, or they may be involved with marketing goods sold via a chain of charity shops. Some understanding of taxation may be needed in order to promote the use of covenants and bequests by potential donors and to set up payroll donations in large companies.

Much of the time, fundraisers are involved in setting up and administering schemes, monitoring and chasing progress. They work with volunteers and a management committee composed of volunteers. At the same time, fundraisers will need to be acceptable to sponsors and be able to work alongside show business personalities or even royalty. Fundraisers must be able to articulate their cause persuasively in order to motivate people. The work can be pressurized. A special event needs to be well organized and there may be few back-up staff or resources to call on.

Charity fundraisers may give talks to schools, women groups, and similar organizations to raise awareness of the charity’s work and to recruit volunteers to give their sklls and time, as well as money.

Fundraisers work mainly in an office, but they may also travel extensively to attend meetings and special fundraising events. Some charities may employ only one fundraiser, while larger charities may have a fundraising department with a special events organizer, a sponsorship manager, or a legacy officer. Because of the need to attend committee meetings outside of normal office hours and also because of running and attending events, hours worked may sometimes be unsocial.

Training Involved:

Many fundraisers come from related areas, such as marketing, public relations, sales, administration, or teaching. Others will have worked for the charity managing volunteers or a charity shop. Larger charities will provide on-the-job training but in smaller charities new entrants will have to learn much from other members of the profession. Experience of fundraising as a volunteer or committee member is also helpful.

Useful Qualifications to Have:

Useful subjects include: English, mathematics.

Salary Expectations:

The base salary range of a Charity Fundraiser ranges from $38,727 to $83,532 annually, while the median salary for most Charity Fundraisers is $60,500 annually. (US Base Pay)

Future Prospects:

Fundraising is a vital part of many charities’ activities. There is strong demand for professional fundraisers, particularly those with experience, since the number of charities is growing rapidly. Many different charities employ fundraisers, ranging from national and international bodies to local charities, medical, educational, environmental, or single-issue charities.

Where jobs involve managing projects and staff, this is reflected in the salary. Other salaries tend to be lower than comparable jobs in industry and commerce. However, major charities may provide a package of benefits and very good training. Traditionally fundraising has been a second career for people with business experience. A common career move would be to go to a charity with a larger fundraising target and hence pay would be higher. There is scope for those with experience to become self-employed as a consultant. Some international charities offer scope for travel and the use of foreign languages.

For further information, contact an institute of charity fundraising managers or the offices of large national charities.

Cheerleader Fundraising

October 14th, 2011 by Terrence Fitzgerald

Fundraising events are a popular way to earn money for schools, organizations and specific causes – everything from gala dinner auctions to walk-a-thons to school carnivals have become established and accepted ways to raise money. With all this fund raising going on, it is also common for organizers to feel overwhelmed and overworked – especial if they are volunteers. If you find yourself in charge, or involved in planning a fundraising event, here are some guidelines to help you through the process…

    1. Know your community! Can your community support another auction or is it likely that people in your “target demographic” would come to a formal fundraiser? Try to get a feel for what works in your community, what other events might be going on at the same time, and who you are likely to be targeting with your event. Don’t be afraid to try something new – in fact, something fresh and new may be perfect – but, consider your community and what is likely to be well received.

    2. Put together a stellar committee! One person cannot do all the work, it will be important to have a committee made up of both worker bees and well-connected individuals. Keep an open mind as you’re forming your committee – don’t just rely on women, wives or mothers – include men, seniors, students – the more broad your volunteer-based, the broader your appeal is likely to be. And, by diversifying your volunteer committee, you’ll cover more bases in terms of getting the work done.

    3. Develop a Timeline! Give yourself plenty of time, and schedule that time out with the details and tasks necessary to accomplish the event. Start with the date of your event and plan backwards to make sure that you have enough time and person-power assigned to accomplish things. Set deadlines and keep them – review your timeline often to keep on top of things. By paying attention to details and time management, you’ll be ready when those unexpected surprises and time crunches come up in the process.

    4. Develop a budget and price competitively! Spend some time going to other events in your community and talk with other organizers, event planners and volunteers. Develop a budget of expenses and anticipated revenue – including any in kind donations of goods and services you expect to receive and try to be as accurate as possible. Realistic expectations are key in keeping up moral and staying motivated as you proceed with your event. As you think about revenue, make sure that you do not charge too little or too much for your event. Consider “add-ons” – ways to increase revenue such as selling raffle tickets, a silent auction, a direct-mail campaign in association with your event, or other ways to raise funds in addition to the actual event.

    5. Don’t forget the marketing! Getting the word out is key to putting on a successful event. If you can afford to budget money to pay for advertising, do so – but you can get plenty of free public relations too. Utilize the press release and send it out to every radio and TV station, newspaper, newsletter and anyone else you can think of. Try to come up with interesting story angles around your event and definitely use your cause as a public relations tool if you can tell a good story and generate public interest. Look to businesses and community supporters and see if they will help you market – either through their company advertising, their employees or their connections. Some community-minded businesses will share their advertising space with a special event – especially if they are a sponsor. Marketing is a place to be as creative as you can in thinking about ways to generate interest in your event. Don’t expect to just hold an event and attract people – it will take some energetic marketing to bring in the public.

Although there are a thousand details to organizing and pulling off a successful fundraising event, if you keep in mind these five basic elements, you’ll be well on your way to filling the coffers and generating plenty of attention to your cause!

Cancer Fundraising

October 14th, 2011 by Terrence Fitzgerald

Another apple dog! by thedogreporter

“You have cancer” has become one of the most dreaded phrases of our time. And there’s no question as to why these simple words are dreaded like the plague. After the verdict, you get your choice of punishment: pump your body full of toxic chemicals, deadly radiation, or die a slower, more miserable death. What’s disturbing about this is the fact that there are several ways to prevent, treat, and even cure cancer, but the majority of the people who will die from cancer will have never been informed of these methods that could have saved their lives. I think it’s time that we stop contributing to the increasing number of cancer deaths each year. To successfully do this, we must accept the fact that our lifestyles and our diets are the main causes of cancer. Food and cigarette manufacturers know this too; yet they continue to fill us up with their cancer-causing products. The time has come for these companies to pay for the deaths they cause, and also for the FDA to be exposed for the insincere hustlers that they are.~

Recent studies report that 60-70% of all cancer cases are due to dietary factors, and one-third of cancer deaths in the U.S. are associated with tobacco use (Weisburger). Our government believes that people should be allowed to make the decision to smoke cigarettes. They justify this by placing little warnings on each pack of cigarettes. Therefore, the government gives us the freedom to choose to use an addictive drug that will increase our likelihood of getting cancer by up to 90%. However, our government does not allow us to choose to cure ourselves of cancer with the many cancer treatments available in other parts of the world, mainly Europe, where as a result of immunology treatments, cancer survival rates are twice as high as in the U.S. (Weisburger). The FDA will not allow these treatments to be given in the U.S. So, we have the right to inject ourselves with cancer, yet we do not have the right to cure ourselves of cancer. Does this make sense?~

What’s even worse is that one of the main causes of cancer is the foods we eat, which are regulated by the FDA. Diet has been estimated to account for up to 80% of cancers of the large bowel, breast, and prostate. Diet affects the risk of many other cancers, including cancers of the lung, prostate, stomach, esophagus and pancreas to varying extents. Proper diet can prevent 3-4 million cancers each year. (American Journal) One of the most common ingredients in the food in your cupboard right now is also the most deadly. This ingredient is “partially hydrogenated oil”. If you’ve ever read a food label, chances are you’ve seen it listed in the ingredients – these oils are used in almost everything! Hydrogenation is the process of liquid fats such as sunflower, safflower, or soybean oil being hardened via the process of hydrogenation (heating oil and passing hydrogen bubbles through it). The fat that is formed as a result is called trans fatty acids. If you fully hydrogenate, you create a solid (a fat) out of oil. But if you stop part way, you have semi-solid partially hydrogenated oil that has a consistency like butter. This process alters the structure of some of the polyunsaturated fatty acids so that their effect on blood cholesterol is similar to that of saturated fatty acids. According to Weisburger, there are three main reasons why partially hydrogenated oil is a favorite as a butter substitute among food producers:~

• It has a consistency similar to butter.
• It is cheaper to produce than butter.
• It gives their products a richer flavor for less than the cost of butter.~

According to the USDA, nearly 6.5 billion pounds of hydrogenated soybean oil are used in cooking oils each year. What’s wrong with hydrogenation? Unlike butter, hydrogenated oils contain high levels of trans fats. A trans fat is an otherwise normal fatty acid that has been transmogrified by high-heat processing of a free oil. It can be double-linked, cross-linked, bond-shifted, twisted, or messed up in a variety of other ways. The problem with trans fats is that while the “business end” (the chemically active part) is messed up, the “anchor end” (the part that is attached to the cell wall) is unchanged. So they take up their position in the cell wall, like a guard on the fortress wall. But like a bad guard, they don’t do their job! They let foreign invaders pass unchallenged, and they stop supplies at the gates instead of letting them in. In short, trans fats are poisons, just like arsenic or cyanide. They interfere with the metabolic processes of life. And that is the definition of a poison (Mirkin). The body has no defense against them, because they never even existed in our two billion years of evolution – so we’ve never had the need or the opportunity to evolve a defense against them. Consuming partially hydrogenated oils is like inhaling cigarette smoke. They will kill you – slowly, over time, but as surely as you breathe. Yet restaurants serve these deadly oils to millions of people every day. A few examples of restaurants that exceed the RDA of dangerous fats are:~

• McDonald’s Fries: total fat is 19 grams (including 4g saturated & 4g trans fats)
• 9 chicken nuggets at McDonald’s: total fat is 25 grams (5g saturated & 3g trans fats)
• Burger King’s chicken sandwich: total fat is 43 grams (9g saturated & 2g trans fats)~

Why does the FDA allow these popular restaurants to exceed the daily limits which they recommended themselves?~

Hydrogenated oils are only one of the many carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substances that the American diet is made up of. Others include: food additives, preservatives, nitrites, food colorings, fatty meats, smoked meats, all of which are approved by the FDA (Simone). There are many foods that prevent cancer and some that will even heal cancer. In fact, the reason that cancer rates are so much lower in other countries, such as Japan, China, and Thailand, is the differences in diet. The food that is known to provide the most protection against cancer is the soybean (Dolby). The United States is the world’s largest producer of this legume; however, the U.S exports 80% of the soybeans it produces to other countries, many in the Far East, where cancer is only 1/3 as common as it is in the United States.~

Dr. Herbert L. Ley, former Commissioner of the FDA, once said “The thing that bugs me is that people think the Food and Drug Administration is protecting them – it isn’t. What the FDA is doing and what the public thinks it’s doing are as different as night and day.” (Ley) It’s time for people to stop this human sacrifice that is taking place within our country. Food producers should be held responsible for what’s in their food products. And the FDA should be replaced by a committee with people’s health in mind.~

Party Rentals Miami

October 7th, 2011 by Terrence Fitzgerald

Party by Philipp Berndt!

(CNN) – Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer slammed President Obama Thursday for “playing class warfare” with the “millionaire’s surtax.”

The new tax on those with income over a million dollars a year was introduced by Senate Democrats to pay for the president’s American Jobs Act. The President endorsed the measure at his Thursday news conference.

“There are a number of people that have signed these pledges that they’re not going to raise taxes and they have no hope of getting it through,” Kremer said on CNN’s Newsroom.

She described the push as another stimulus that won’t work and a way to “blame Republicans.”

Instead, Kremer suggested cutting the corporate tax so that businesses can “start to have confidence in the system and go forward and hire people.”

And when it comes to compromise, the tea party leader pushed back at the president’s claim that the GOP has been reluctant to bargain.

“Republicans have put plan after plan out there and the Democrats say no,” she asserted, citing “Cut, Cap and Balance,” and House Budget Chair Paul Ryan’s plan to overhaul entitlements as evidence.

“It is not Washington’s responsibility to create jobs; it’s the private sector’s responsibility to create jobs, that’s where the jobs come from,” Kremer said.

Looking ahead to 2012, she named businessman Herman Cain as “the one to watch,” though Kremer balked at giving him an out-and-out endorsement.

Her stamp of approval would give any GOP candidate a boost among the sought-after tea party vote.

“Herman Cain is doing a major thing right now,” she said. “He’s got a lot of momentum, a lot of people like him, he’s a straight talker, he’s a businessman and that’s what people like.”

But she also hedged her praise of the conservative radio talk show host who’s been rising in national polls.

“I think that the field is still very volatile,” Kremer said.

Of all that the Tea Party has accomplished, perhaps the movement’s most unlikely achievement to date is the admiration it has inspired on the activist Left. Disillusioned with President Obama and the rapid dissipation of a long-term left-wing dominance that Obama’s victory was supposed to usher in, left-wing activists and commentators have come to look upon the Tea Party as a model to revive their faded political fortunes.

Speaking for many on the Left, Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen recently acknowledged, “I suffer from Tea Party envy.” Similarly, the disgruntled twenty-somethings taking part in the Occupy Wall Street campaign have styled their protests as a left-wing and anti-capitalist version of the Tea Party. The latest left-wing admirer of the Tea Party is none other than Van Jones, the disgraced former Obama administration official who was ousted from his post as green jobs czar following revelations of his radical past, which included signing a 9/11 “Truther” petition. Time off from professional politics has afforded Van Jones an opportunity to reflect, and like many on the Left he has concluded that in order to regain their relevance, progressives must take a page from the Tea Party’s playbook.

Van Jones made his appreciation of the Tea Party’s success clear on Monday, when he was the keynote speaker at the Take Back the American Dream Conference in Washington D.C. The conference, featuring a number of prominent left-wing groups, was intended as a first step in the left’s attempt to build a cohesive national movement as a progressive counterpart to the Tea Party.

Today's Medications by oldog_oltrix

Prescription acne medication is usually reserved for people with severe acne, but can be used for people with moderate acne or acne that has not responded to other treatments and medications in the past. Over-the-counter treatments for moderate to severe acne may not be effective and can also increase chance of scarring if cysts are present. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), scarring from acne cysts is a risk due to cysts rupturing. To prevent scarring in cystic acne patients, dermatologists may inject cysts with a diluted-corticosteroid to lesson inflammation and promote faster healing. The AAD states that this works by melting the cyst over 3 to 5 days. How do you prevent acne cysts from occurring and understand which medication is best for you?

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin, commonly known as Accutane, is the most effective prescription medication when it comes to treating severe acne. Even though it is an effective treatment, it is often used as a last resort after all other methods have been tried due the severe side effects that come with it. Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should not use isotretinoin . It causes severe birth defects and if a woman is of child bearing age, she is required to use two forms of birth control a month prior to using, during use of this medication, and up to a month after stopping isotretinoin. This insures that the woman is not pregnant or will become pregnant while using this acne treatment. Severe chest and abdomen pain, painful swallowing, headaches and dizziness, bone and joint pain, nausea, rectal bleeding, depression, skin dryness and thinning hair are additional side effects of this medication, according to the AAD. Isotretinoin is a synthetic retinoid or form of vitamin A that comes as a pill and is taken once or twice a day for approximately 16 to 20 weeks. Patients are regularly monitored by their physician or dermatologist while taking this medication.

Tretinoin

Tretinoin is a natural retinoid or vitamin A derivative used as a topical acne treatment. Dermatologists prescribe tretinoin to unclog pores and keep them unplugged, preventing acne outbreaks from occurring. However, it does have some harsh side effects like dryness, scaling, redness, burning and itching that may result from use of this medication. According to the AAD, side effects can be minimized by adjusting the amount of cream applied and how many times per day it is applied. If taking this topical acne medication, talk to your dermatologist if you develop any of these side effects.

Oral Contraceptives

If you are a woman and have moderate to severe acne, oral contraceptives like birth control pills may help alleviate acne symptoms. Oral contraceptives help by suppressing overactive sebaceous glands which are the oil producing glands that contribute to acne, as stated by the AAD. If your dermatologist wants to prescribe oral contraceptives to you in order to treat your acne, talk with your gynecologist first to make sure you are a candidate. Oral contraceptives may not be prescribed to women who are over 35 years old, smoke, are susceptible to migraine headaches, or have a blood clotting disorder.

Oral Antibiotics

People who have moderate to severe acne that is persistent, oral antibiotics like erythromycin or tetracycline are prescribed. Oral antibiotics work by controlling the bacteria that causes acne, P. acnes. They also help with inflammation and are prescribed for six months or less and are not a good long term treatment for acne. Certain antibiotics should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breast feeding, as it can impact bone and teeth development of a fetus or infant. If you are thinking about taking a prescription medication, either orally or topically, talk to your dermatologist about which medication may be right for you. Discuss how long it will take for you to achieve the desired results and the side effects associated with each medication.
